Overview

Since its inception in 2007, the Department of Respiratory Medicine at KIMS Bhubaneswar has achieved significant growth with many dynamic physicians and pulmonologists joining the core team. The Faculty and Post-Graduate students have also brought laurels to the alma mater, offering extraordinary services during the Pandemic. The mission of the Department is to provide affordable world-class healthcare facilities, benefitting even the poorest of the poor. OPD and IPD services apart, the Department has a state-of-the-art infrastructure for pulmonary investigations and procedures. There are 30 publications by the faculty and students, combined.

The Department of Respiratory Medicine at KIMS Bhubaneswar started functioning from 2007. However, many dynamic physicians and pulmonologists later joined the team and contributed to its growth and development.

The mission is to provide affordable world-class healthcare facilities, fulfilling the vision of the KIIT, KISS and KIMS Founder Prof Achyut Samanta. The Founder’s vision is to offer quality services that reach out to the poorest of the poor in society.

Services  Provided

  • OPD & IPD: The Department has a fully functional out-patient department (OPD), which functions between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on all working days and 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on holidays. Out of the 50 IPD beds, 10 are dedicated to TB. The indoor patient services run 24×7 with dedicated doctors and staff including HDU/ICU facilities. The emergency services include attending to patients in Emergency and other Departments.
  • Facilities: The equipment available at the Department include a computer-based spirometer for accurate diagnosis of obstructive and restrictive lung diseases. Apart from this, fibre-optic bronchoscopy for both diagnostic as well as therapeutic indications is being performed electively as well as in critically ill patients. A paediatric bronchoscope is also functioning, while a Rigid Bronchoscope will be added very shortly.
  • Sleep Lab: A dedicated Level-1 sleep lab catering to the needs of patients with sleep disturbances (like snoring, parasomnia, periodic leg movement disorders, insomnia etc.) has been installed. Advanced PFT with impulse oscillometry and DLCO, also endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is in the phase of procurement to provide an edge in the diagnosis and management of challenging cases.

Research/Publications/Awards

The faculties carry out research work in the areas of tuberculosis, obstructive airway diseases, interstitial lung diseases, infectious diseases including COVID-19 etc. and have published more than 30 articles.

MD Respiratory Medicine has three seats and students are involved in a highly intensive academic programme through seminars, case presentations and lectures with hands-on training. All PG students are provided two months of dedicated ICU posting for comprehensive learning. The students have also presented posters and papers at European Respiratory Society-Congress, NAPCON, NATCON and the annual state Chest conference CHESTCON.

The Post-Graduate graduate students have also made us proud through their achievements and earned prizes in four-poster presentations, five paper presentations, three quiz competitions and one oral competition.

The faculties have received awards from Rotary International, TOI and Odisha Chest Society, respectively. The Department has successfully organized two State conferences, the 16th and 17th CHESTCON in 2020 and 2021 consecutively. Recently it organized a CME on “Sleep medicine” with national speakers in a hybrid model.
