Overview

Department of Physiology wants to become among the foremost in the health education sector imparting translational knowledge from the core principles of Physiology and its application in modern medicine. Its mission is to be a Centre of Excellence for functional diagnostic support and to nurture collaborative research and imbibe quality academic. It has a state-of-the art infrastructure and modern amenities for clinical examination and software for simulation-based experiment. The research laboratory is equipped with ultra-modern equipment for patient diagnostics. The Department has 181 research publications to its credit.

Human Physiology, taught as a part of medical science, lays the foundation stone for basic medical subjects and is referred as “Mother of Medicine” as it is an integrative discipline, which builds concepts regarding the conventional functioning of the human body.

The Department of Physiology at KIMS Bhubaneswar received its first batch of MBBS students in 2007 and currently provides teaching to MBBS, MD, Ph.D, BDS, MDS, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and other allied courses. While the vision of the Department is to be among the foremost in the health education sector imparting translational knowledge from the core principles of Physiology and its application in modern medicine, its mission is to be a Centre of Excellence for functional diagnostic support and to nurture collaborative research and imbibe quality academic skills along with patients’ investigational activities.

Services  Provided

  • The Department has a state of the art infrastructure and modern amenities for clinical examination and software for simulation-based amphibian experiment.
  • The research laboratory is equipped with Powerlab 26T for HRV analysis, Neurocompact 24-channel EEG, digital polygraph,12-Lead ECG, CANWin for autonomic function testing, Bodystat Quadscan 4000 for body composition analysis, WinSpiro PRO for PFT which is also used for patient diagnostics.

Prof. Dr. Pranati Nanda has more than 35 years of teaching and research experience in different Govt. medical colleges, accomplished Professorship at AIIMS BBSR engaging in UG and PG training. She has received multiple awards, naming a few: Health Care Provider, Acls Provider, 2013 by American Heart Association, Certificate of Appreciation by Orissa Swasthya Seva Sangh and Certificate of Appreciation by “Association of Palliative care society of India”. She has the experience of serving on different academic committees, reviewing manuscripts for academic journals.

Prof. Dr. Rama Raman Mohanty has 35 years of teaching, research and administrative experience in various government medical colleges and Director of Medical Education. He has the expertise in Post Graduate teaching and research along with UG teaching.

Prof. Dr. Sudeep Satpathy is an experienced International Sports Physician and was the Team doctor of Indian National Hockey team in 2021 and Kerala Blasters in 2015. He works as Tournament Doctor for BWF, FIFA and AFC. He is member of prestigious FSEM – Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (Royal College of Surgeons). He is also Ambassador (India) for the International Institute of Race Medicine, USA that organises the Boston Marathon and is knowledge partner of World Athletics.

Prof. Dr. Magna Manjareeka has 15 years of UG and PG teaching and research experience with over 34 publications. She is Editor and Reviewer to many esteemed journals. She is a part of the COE as Vice-Chancellor nominee and member of the IQAC team, Institutional Research Committee. She is a key resource person in Medical Education Unit of KIMS with completed Advanced Course in Medical Education.

Prof. Dr. Priyadarsini Samanta was awarded the 2nd Best Faculty Oral Paper Award at the 10th Congress of Federation of Indian Physiological Societies (FIPS) and the 10th International Conference of the Association of Physiologists of India (ASSOPI), held at AIIMS Patna. Under her guidance, 6 ICMR-STS Projects got approval consecutively.

Dr. Soumya Mishra is a key resource person in the Medical Education Unit with completed Advance Course in Medical Education. She has additional degrees in Clinical Nutrition and M Sc in Yoga Therapy. She has taken many administrative roles such as Member Secretary of Institutional Ethics Committee, development and maintenance of the KIMS website and social media handles. She is also an active member in University level Multidisciplinary Counselling Committee and core member of the K3 Ladies Club, representing KIMS.

Dr. Aparajita Priyadarsini is the Associate Member Secretary of IEC, KIMS.

Dr. Anugya Aparajita Behera received “Purnamasi Devi” award for best paper presentation in 2016 from the Association of Physiologists of Orissa.

Dr. Barsha Baishali Parida has received “Prof Niranjana Bishnupriya Award” for best faculty presentation on 2024 from the Association of Physiologists of Orissa. She is involved in IONM and sleep lab of KIMS.

The Physiology Department had organised two Annual Conference of Association of Physiologists of Odisha (APOCON) in 2008 and 2015 respectively. It had also organised Stem Cell CME in 2008, Hypertension CME in 2010, workshop on evaluation and assessment in 2013, CME on Autonomic functions – Clinical and Research Window to Neuropsychiatric Disorders in 2020, Advanced insulin therapy and delivery in 2020 and a national CME on Intraoperative Neuromonitoring in 2021 with two credit points.
