Overview

The Department of Paediatrics at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Bhubaneswar is recognized as one of the leading pediatric and neonatal care centers in Odisha, attracting patients both locally and from neighboring states due to its high-quality services and affordable care.

Established with a vision to become a nationally recognized Pediatric and Neonatal Centre, the department aims to provide exceptional standards of pediatric and neonatal  care with a strong emphasis on patient safety and satisfaction.

About The Department

  • The Department introduced MD Paediatrics in 2017 with 3 seats, subsequently revised to 6. It started a Fellowship in Neonatology in 2016, running a one year course with 2 seats.

  • The Fellowship in Critical Care was launched in 2020 with 2 seats as a one year course. While 2 faculty members are undergoing PhD programme, 3 have been identified as PhD guides.

  • The Paediatrics Department of KIMS works as a one stop solution dedicated to deliver complete, comprehensive, compassionate state-of-the-art health care services to children from birth to adolescence.

Services

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Managed approximately 180 neonates born to COVID-19 positive mothers with a remarkable survival rate.

  • Pioneered neonatal high-frequency ventilation for extremely low birth weight babies in Odisha.

  • Success story: Survival of 530 gram weight baby doing well till date

  • Accredited as the first center in Eastern India to offer a fellowship in Pediatric Intensive Care

  • Organized significant conferences and workshops, including the 41st Annual Conference of IAP Odisha State Pedicon in 2021.

  • Conducted first ever KIMS paediatric update with participation by national level faculties.

RESEARCH/PUBLICATIONS/AWARDS

(Conferences/CME/Workshop)

  • The Department had organized CME on “Thalassemia Ensuring Optimal Care for All” in June 2019, Paediatric Intensive Care workshop in November 2019, Pre-Conference Workshop on Development Supportive Care (DSC) and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in October 2021.
  • Besides, it organized 41st Annual Conference of IAP Odisha State Pedicon on December 11 and 12 in 2021 and Basic NRP Workshop on March 8, 2022.
  • During the last two years, 70 papers were published by the Faculty of the Department and currently 20 ongoing research projects are underway.

Visits

  • While eminent neonatologist Prof (Dr) Praveen Kumar, Head of Neonatology Division, PGI Chandigarh (first DM in Neonatologist of India) visited our NICU on 22nd Nov 19 and appreciated the level of Neonatal care of the Department, Prof. (Dr) N Koneti Rao (MD, FRCPA), a staff physician in National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at National Institute of Health (NIH) was a visiting professor in the Dept of Pediatrics on 11-12 Nov 19.
  • Prof (Dr) Neelam Giri, Staff Clinician, genetic branch DCEG/NCI (Dept of Cancer Epidemiology/National Cancer Institute) Bethesda (USA), was a visiting professor in the Dept. of Pediatrics on 13-14 Nov 19.
