Overview

The department of IHBT at PBMH and KIMS was established in year 2021 with starting of post graduate course from 2022. The department is well equipped to address complex transfusion needs in the patients. It plays a critical role in supporting clinical services by ensuring the availability of safe, compatible blood and blood products, performing advanced pre-transfusion testing by gel technology, and managing transfusion-related complications. It serves as a referral centre for patients with difficult transfusion requisites. The department closely collaborates with Hematology, Oncology, Surgery, Obstetrics, Critical care units for planning and managing patients with conditions requiring frequent transfusions (thalassemia, hemophilia, sickle cell disease), autoimmune hemolyticanemia, transplants recipients, alloimmunized pregnancies etc.

The Department of Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion (IHBT) is a specialized branch within medical and healthcare institutions that focuses on:

  • Blood banking and transfusion medicine
  • Immunohaematology (the study of antigen-antibody reactions related to blood)
  • Safe and effective use of blood and blood components

Mission

  • To provide high-quality education and training to medical students, postgraduate trainees, and healthcare professionals in the field of transfusion medicine.
  • To ensure the highest standards of patient care through safe and efficient blood transfusion services.
  • To promote ethical, voluntary, and non-remunerated blood donation and create public awareness about the importance of blood safety.
  • To encourage and conduct innovative research in immunohaematology, transfusion medicine, and related disciplines.
  • To foster collaborations with national and international institutions for academic, clinical, and research advancement.
  • To uphold the principles of quality, safety, compassion, and professionalism in all departmental activities.

Vision

To be a center of excellence in immunohaematology and blood transfusion, dedicated to advancing knowledge, improving patient care, promoting safe blood practices, and fostering innovation in transfusion medicine through education, research, and service.

Research & Achievements

The Department of Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion is actively engaged in cutting-edge research aimed at advancing transfusion medicine and improving patient outcomes. Our research focuses on a wide range of areas, including:

  • Blood Group Serology and Immunohaematology: Exploring rare blood groups, alloimmunization, and hemolytic disease of the newborn to enhance compatibility testing and transfusion safety.
  • Transfusion Transmitted Infections (TTIs): Monitoring the prevalence of TTIs and developing strategies to ensure the highest standards of blood safety.
  • Apheresis: Research on therapeutic apheresis, stem cell collection, and the clinical application of blood components in various disease conditions.
  • Patient Blood Management (PBM): Investigating strategies to optimize the use of blood products, minimize transfusions, and improve outcomes in surgical and medical patients.
  • Component Therapy and Quality Control: Improving preparation, storage, and quality control of blood components to ensure optimal clinical efficacy.
  • Donor Studies: Research on donor selection, deferral criteria, donor motivation, and strategies to improve voluntary non-remunerated blood donation.

The department actively collaborates with other national institutions, fosters student research projects, and regularly publishes in peer-reviewed journals. Through our research, we aim to contribute to the advancement of transfusion medicine and improve the safety and effectiveness of blood transfusion services.

Achievements

  • Recognized with the AmritSanjeevaniRasthriyaSaman Award for exceptional dedication to transfusion services.
  • Received the SevaRatna Award for the selfless contribution and dedicated services towards voluntary blood donation.
