Overview
Intensive care unit (ICU) is one of the most dynamic and sensitive places in any hospital. Some of the sickest and the most vulnerable patients are admitted and cared for by the critical care team. The Department of Critical Care Medicine at PBMH, headed by Prof. Dr. Sujit Kumar Pradhan aims to provide the highest quality of care to critically ill patients emphasizing evidence-based practices, multidisciplinary collaboration and a patient centered approach.
Mission
We are a multifaceted academic division striving to provide the best possible quality driven critical care through constant monitoring and prompt therapeutic interventions in the most compassionate, cost effective and innovative way. Our core values are providing service to our patients, promoting ethical and sustainable clinical practices and patient advocacy.
What we do
Critically ill patients need comprehensive care inclusive of both clinical expertise and technology. They require multiple time sensitive procedures like intubation for initiation of mechanical ventilation, central venous catheter insertion, arterial line insertion, hemodialysis catheter placement, thoracocentesis, paracentesis, tracheostomy etc. which are performed as per the needs of the patient.
Our ICUs are designed to provide care and comfort to the sickest patients and ensure their privacy and autonomy. We also have isolation rooms for patients with poor immunity like post-transplant and cancer patients. Our department is a large stakeholder in infection control and has been actively pursuing strict infection control protocols, raising awareness about hand hygiene and other sepsis prevention bundles.
Services Provided
Our department is well equipped to manage a wide range of medical conditions like

Academics/Research
Our department has fellowship programs for post-MBBS students (annually 4 seats) and post-MD students (annually 4 seats). We train our students in diagnosing the patient and prompt management, to recognize early warning signs and red flags and respond and resuscitate in time.
We endeavor to update our clinical skills and knowledge through regular seminars, journal clubs and case presentations. Multiple conferences and workshops have been organized like:
- 2018 : Sepsis and toxicology
- 2018 : Fungal sepsis and toxicology
- 2019 : Advanced Trauma Care CME and workshop (first edition)
- 2023 : Advanced Trauma Care CME and workshop (second edition)
- 2024 : Infectious disease conference and workshop
- 2025 : Advanced Trauma Care CME and workshop (third edition)
We work towards empowering our nurses and have conducted a 6-month training course for senior ICU nurses for skill upgradation. Our faculties have several publications in indexed journals along with chapter contributions in textbooks. There are multiple ongoing research projects in the department as well.
