With Professor Ramnath Misra as its dean, the Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, founded in 2013, is among the best in India. Stalwarts in the field like Dr. Prasanta Padhan, Dr. Sakir Ahmed, and Dr. Debashis Maikap are among those who have contributed to its position. The fact that this Super Specialty Department has treated more than 40,000 patients with high-quality consultation in the past year gives a good indication of its popularity and dependence. Although the department began offering the DM in Rheumatology in the 2021–2022 academic year, faculty members have already published 625 articles in several reputable national and international journals.

The Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology in KIMS is one of the best in the country. Headed by the doyen of Rheumatology education in India, Professor Ramnath Misra (former Dean of SGPGI Lucknow) and his team of stalwarts such as Dr Prasanta Padhan, Dr Sakir Ahmed and Dr. Debashis Maikap has created a niche ecosystem for itself with patients coming from the entire Eastern region for consultation. It was established by Prof. (Dr.) Prasanta Padhan as a Super Speciality Department on May 13, 2013.  The Department has provided high-quality OPD services in autoimmune diseases and served over 40,000 patients in 2021. 

A systemic autoimmune disease is one in which one’s own immune system attacks the own body. They may present with unexplained or prolonged fever, fever with skin rash, arthritis and may involve different organs of the body (kidney, lung, liver, brain, heart) at the same time or consecutively.

Aim & Vision

The Department aims to provide cost-effective, state-of-the-art treatment to patients suffering from Rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders and their various manifestations as the subject deals with all kinds of arthritis, pain syndromes and autoimmune diseases.

Facilities Available

The Department has facilities including musculoskeletal ultrasound, various autoantibody testing and interpretation, and unparalleled experience in the use of immunosuppressant’s and biological drugs. Most of all, all faculty members believe in treating the patient as a whole instead of just treating symptoms. The department is complemented by an able orthopaedics department when any joint surgery is required. The physiotherapy and occupational therapy departments make the care of the patients complete.

Awareness Generation

The department is actively involved in the creation of public awareness about rheumatological diseases. Various public health lectures and audio/video programmes are conducted every year explaining to the patients about the diseases and their management. In addition, the department frequently organizes CMEs and updates the treating physicians.

Courses & Training

The department has recently started a three years academic course DM in Rheumatology in the year 2021-22. The faculty members, all with a great interest in clinical research have published 625 research-based papers both in international and national journals of repute.
