Overview
The Postgraduate Department of Biochemistry is a cornerstone of Basic Sciences in our teaching hospital, integrating medical education, research, and diagnostics. It imparts clinically oriented Biochemistry education and training to students across MBBS, MD, BDS, MDS, PhD, Nursing, and paramedical programs. Currently, the department trains 250 MBBS students, 2 MD students annually, 100 BDS students, and several paramedical trainees.
Our NABL-accredited Central Laboratory supports a 2,600-bed hospital, offering advanced biochemical, hormonal, electrolyte, and tumor marker assays using state-of-the-art automated platforms. Faculty members are actively engaged in research, with several published patents. The MD Biochemistry program ensures 100% postgraduate placement, with many alumni excelling as diagnostic entrepreneurs.
Clinical Diagnostic Lab
Biochemistry division of central lab which is a very large lab receives an average of 1300 to 1500 samples per day and works 24 x 7. It is NABL accredited striving to deliver the best possible service to the patients. Around 100 biochemical, hormonal and immunological parameters are analyzed in our lab with an optimum turnaround time (TAT).
Biochemistry division is equipped with cutting edge
- 2 fully automated analyzers (DxC 700 AU & VITROS 5600)
- Fully automated immunoassay analyzer (UniCel Dxi 800 & AIA 360)
- Automated HbA1c analyzers
- Semi-automated analyzers
- Electrophoresis gel analyser
- Automated ELISA analyser
Mission
- Provide clinically oriented biochemistry education to undergraduates by integrating fundamental knowledge with applicability in patient care.
- Foster research and innovation among students and faculty.
- Enhance the research capabilities of postgraduates and faculty in alignment with national healthcare priorities.
- Develop a state-of-the-art molecular research lab to advance biomedical studies.
- Expand clinical diagnostic services to include molecular and toxicology testing, in addition to routine biochemical and immunological assays, for comprehensive patient care.
Vision
To establish the department as a tripod platform integrating clinical-based academic training for students, indigenous original research addressing national healthcare needs, and advanced clinical diagnostics for enhanced patient care.
Medical education
Our department follows CBME curriculum for MBBS implementing innovative teaching with clinical correlations. Apart from regular didactic lectures, there are frequent quizzes, multiple methods of evaluation.
MD post-graduates are trained in basic technologies of Biochemistry as well as clinical Biochemistry with practical experience gained at central lab. They are trained in pedagogy as early as possible. They are trained in cutting edge technologies needed for clinical lab as well as research lab and are encouraged to take part in training programs off and on.
Other programs like BDS, MDS, BSc nursing, Allied Sciences are also taken care by our competent faculty base.
Research
The faculty, undergraduate and post-graduate students are involved in multiple projects at individual levels and at inter-departmental level.
The major areas of research are
- Laboratory diagnostics
- Biomarkers for different metabolic disorders
- Cancer biology
- Multicentric study on reference range setting
- Nutrition
- Oxidative stress
- Molecular diagnostics
There are around 250 research publications, one book and book chapter publication by the faculties.
Innovation
Our department also takes pride in having 8 patents out of which in two, undergraduate students have been also involved with an aim to kindle the fire of innovation among the youth.
The patents are mostly on medical device and educational materials.
Placement
Postgraduate placement is consistently excellent and 100%, with many alumni successfully pursuing entrepreneurial ventures in the diagnostic services sector.
