
Overview
The Department of Respiratory Medicine & Interventional Pulmonology at KIMS, Bhubaneswar, is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic, and interventional care for patients with respiratory diseases. Equipped with a highly skilled team of pulmonologists and cutting-edge facilities, the department ensures comprehensive treatment and research-driven healthcare solutions.
Facilities
- 60 Bedded Inpatient Department (IPD): Male and female wards located on the 5th Floor of E-Block.
- 24 Bedded Respiratory ICU (RICU): Located on the 4th Floor of E-Block.
- 24 Bedded Pulmonary High Dependency Unit (HDU): Situated in the Upper Basement Floor of E-Block.
- 7 Bedded Isolation Ward: Dedicated space for drug-sensitive tuberculosis (DSTB) patients.
- Outpatient Department (OPD): Operates from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Monday to Saturday) and 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (Sundays & Holidays).
- NTEP Microscopy and Rapid Diagnostic Centre: For sputum examination and tuberculosis diagnosis.
OPD Distribution

- Unit II: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs):
- Spirometry
- DLCO
- Impulse Oscillometry (IOS)
- Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT)
Sleep Study:
- Level 1 Polysomnography (PSG).
- BiPAP/CPAP titration for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
Tuberculosis (TB) Screening & Treatment:
NTEP-supported sputum microscopy and TrueNAT-based TB diagnosis.
Interventional Pulmonology
Flexible Bronchoscopy (Adult & Paediatric):
- Diagnostic: Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL), Endobronchial & Transbronchial Biopsy, Cryobiopsy, Brush Cytology.
- Therapeutic: Endobronchial Foreign Body Removal, Debulking.
Cryotherapy & APC (Argon Plasma Coagulation):
- For endobronchial tumor ablation.
Thoracoscopy (Pleuroscopy):
- Pleural Biopsy for undiagnosed effusions.
- Chemical & Mechanical Pleurodesis.
Pleural Procedures:
- Indwelling Pleural Catheter (PleurX) placement for recurrent malignant pleural effusions.
- ICD insertion for pneumothorax, empyema, hemothorax.
Advanced Interventions (Upcoming):
- Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) – For mediastinal lymph node assessment and lung cancer staging.
- Rigid Bronchoscopy – For tumor debulking and airway stenting.
Academic & Research Activities
The department is actively engaged in postgraduate training, research, and continuing medical education.
1. Postgraduate Training
- Intake Capacity: 6 Postgraduate Students (MD Respiratory Medicine) per year (since 2022 batch).
2. Journal Club: Every Monday (3:00 PM – 4:00 PM).
- Journals include Lung India, Chest, The Lancet Respiratory, New England Journal of Medicine, etc.
3. PGT Seminars: Tuesdays & Thursdays (3:00 PM – 4:00 PM).
4. Case Presentations: Every Wednesday (3:00 PM – 4:00 PM).
5. Faculty Seminars: Alternate Fridays on recent updates in Respiratory Medicine & Interventional Pulmonology.
