Overview

The Postgraduate Department of Pharmacology deals with the study of drugs and drug development. With the concept of “Evidence Based Medicine”, the aim of teaching Pharmacology to medical students is to provide a rational basis for choosing and using drugs skilfully to relieve patients’ ailments based on the information.

It imparts academic excellence to the students (MBBS, MD, BDS, nursing, Allied sciences), promote various research projects including animal and human studies, perform activities like monitoring adverse drug reactions and antimicrobial usage as well as providing updated information on various drugs via Drug Information centre. It also carries out prescription auditing.

Mission

  1. To implement CBME Curriculum in full-fledged manner for academic excellence of both UG & PG students.
  2. Equip the students with sufficient knowledge for rational drug prescription.
  3. Equip the students with sufficient knowledge of Evidence based Medicine (EBM).
  4. Train and enable the students to detect, evaluate, prevent, and treat adverse drug reactions.
  5. Train and enable the students to evaluate Materio-vigilance.
  6. Promote interdepartmental collaborative research (pre-clinical animal experiments & human research).
  7. To improve the students’ participation in research.
  8. To improve the quantity and quality of publication.
  9. To start TDM center in the Dept. of Pharmacology.

1. Teaching:

To train undergraduate and postgraduate students in rational drug prescribing for the treatment of common diseases of the community with a special emphasis on pharmacovigilance & drug prescription in children, elderly, and pregnancy.

2. Research:

Conducting high quality research to support evidence-based medicine for medication use and patient safety.

3. To Promote Evidence based medicine (EBM).

Services  Provided

  1. Teaching, learning and evaluation of students for the courses – MD, MBBS, BDS, PhD, Nursing, Allied sciences
  2. Pharmacovigilance- Pharmacovigilance is the sciencerelating to the collection, detection, assessment, monitoring, and prevention of adverse effects with pharmaceutical products. The Department of Pharmacology, KIMS has been functioning as one of the AMCs since September 2015 and we have completed 9 years of the program. Till now around 1500 ADRs have been reported to Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission. All the clinical departments of KIMS are involved in reporting of ADRs.
  3. Animal House Facility- The animal house facility in the Department of Pharmacology, KIMS, Bhubaneswar was established in 2003 under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Manjushree Mohanty. The Animal House is registered with the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA), Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India (Reg. No. 1730/CPCSEA) and has an established Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) that approves projects and advises the students, teachers/researchers on the various facilities, policies and practices regarding the care and use of animals in research.
  4. Drug Information Centre (DIC)- DIC was established in May 2018, and is involved in providing all updated drug related information by using Lexicomp, Martindale and other Compendia to health care professionals.
  5. Antibiotic Stewardship Project- It is a coordinated intervention, designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents, by promoting the selection of optimal antimicrobial drug regimen including dosing, duration of therapy and route of administration.

Cutting Edge Technology

Computer Aided Learning is an integrative technology, which describes an educational environment where a computer program is used to assist the user in learning a particular subject. It refers to an overall integrated approach of instructional methods. Computer aided learning is a device/learning strategy to make teaching more interesting joyful and sustainable.

Areas of Research

  • Preclinical studies (Animal studies)- Toxicological, In-vitro, Anti-inflammatory, Anti-diarrhoeal, Hepatoprotective, Anti-diabetic, wound healing property, Ulcer protective studies
  • Pharmacovigilance- Monitoring safety of drugs
  • Clinical Studies in collaboration with various departments like Endocrinology, Nephrology, Gynaecology, paediatrics, dermatology, Rheumatology etc.

We have two text books, book chapters, around 250 research publications, one grant proposal  and seven short term  internship projects that has been approved by ICMR .

Equipment available (3 PG Research Laboratory)

There is a dedicated research laboratory for PG students. Different equipments are available to assist in research like Rota Rod Apparatus, Digital Analgesiometer, Electroconvulsiometer, Pole climbing Apparatus, Photoactometer, Waterbath, plant extract preparation (ethanol & acqueous).
