The Community Medicine Department at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Bhubaneswar is vital to the institution’s healthcare services. The department focuses on preventing diseases, promoting health, providing primary healthcare services to the community and providing referral secondary and tertiary care

The Community Medicine Department at KIMS Bhubaneswar aims to:

1. Provide Primary Healthcare Services: Deliver essential healthcare services to the community, including preventive, curative, and rehabilitative care.
2. Promote Health Education: Educate the community on healthy practices, disease prevention, and management.
3. Conduct Research and Training: Engage in research activities, training programs, and capacity-building initiatives for allied healthcare professionals and Postgraduate students.

Services  Provided

Rural Health & Training Centre Kalarabank:

  • Provide primary healthcare services, including OPD consultations, basic laboratory services, health check-ups & free medications. Total of 5 slums constitute the catchment area for UHTC
  • Managing School health for the government schools and Aanganwadi centres in that area
  • Arranging for Gynaecology check-ups on fixed day approach
  • Dental health camps and camps as per demand of the community like Eye, ENT, Medicine, and Dermatology are organized successively across the year
  • Health awareness on Health days of relevance are organized besides entertaining academic activities like Role plays, Nukkad nataks and walkathons.
  • Sanitation and plantation campaigns are organized as part of under graduate and post graduate teaching activities.

Urban Health & Training Centre, Niladri vihar

  • Regular days OPD
  • Specialist clinics on a fixed day approach with more emphasis on O & G as well as Medicine
  • Routine surgical procedures and lab facilities available 24*7 at affordable cost
  • Community Medicine oversees Immunization, SUMAN and VHND days in the respective catchment areas
  • School health & house to house health data survey and various cross sectional studies are conducted in the area
  • National programmes agenda is also taken up

Immunisation Services in KIMS Immunisation Clinic:

  • All government vaccines free of cost along with commercial vaccines for both paediatric groups & adults beneficiaries.
  • Vaccinations are being offered to students, staff and faculty as per need and mandate. Eg COVID-19 vaccination & Hepatitis A/typhoid vaccination for hoteliers and Kitchen staffs
  • Currently Vaccine Preventable Diseases surveillance is being done in collaboration with WHO, Odisha and State NHM, as an integrated effort by Departments of Paediatrics, Medicine, ENT and Skin etc
  • Clinical Epidemiology Unit is set up which is now a leading site for Vaccine and community trials for the country

Intramural Research and Surveillance 

Engage in research activities, surveillance, and monitoring of diseases to inform policy and practice. (STS, and PG or faculty non funded research are to be mentioned)

Training and Capacity Building

  • Provide training and capacity-building programs for healthcare professionals, Post Graduates students, and community health workers. (Infection control, BLS, BWM, AMR & Conferences and workshops to be mentioned)
  • Faculty and their designations for like MEU, R&D, Ethics, Quality and transparent Examination reviews (COE), Mentor Mentee programme, foreign faculty visit program coordination, Therapeutic kitchen, BMW management as well as Student and staff counsellors.
  • According to NMC Guidelines there is an intake of 250 MBBS students.
  • Managing the UG students for 6 semesters
  • Regular theory & Practical classes
  • Family visits at UHTC & RHTC
  • Successful FAP (Family Adoption Programme) run since 2021

  • PGT Seminars: FRIDAY (4:00 PM – 5:00 PM).
  • Faculty Seminars: Interdepartmental seminars on recent updates in Community Medicine.

The department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including:
1. Computers and Software: Utilize advanced software and computer systems for data management, analysis, and research.
2. Medical Equipment: Use modern medical equipment, such as blood pressure monitors, stethoscopes, and thermometers, for patient care.
3. Audiovisual Aids: Employ audiovisual aids, such as projectors and screens, for health education and training programs.
