Overview

Patient care, academics and research are the mainstay of the Department of Medicine, which began operations in 2004 and has grown from strength to strength since then.

The Department has 10 NMC approved MD seats and fully equipped ICU with all life support systems and facilities including mechanical ventilators, hemodialysis, ECMO. It also has a well-equipped High Dependency Unit.

The Post Graduate Department of General Medicine has experienced and dedicated faculty members. Besides patient care, the faculty and PG residents are involved in classroom and bedside teaching of MBBS and BDS students.

 Academic activities in the form of seminars, case presentations, journal clubs are conducted daily and interdepartmental academic activities like seminars, clinic-pathological conferences, clinico-radiological conferences are held periodically.

The Department of Medicine started functioning at KIMS in August 2004 and during the last 17 years, it has gained wide admiration, trust and reputation. The Department has the motto to treat with empathy, teach with dedication and research with passion.

The Post Graduate Department of General Medicine has experienced and dedicated faculty members. There are 10 NMC approved MD seats per batch.

The Department has eight units with 240 beds. Patient care, academics and research are the mainstay of the Department.

Patients are treated and managed in OPD and IPD departments and the Department manages a fully equipped intensive care unit (ICU) with advanced life support facilities including mechanical ventilators, hemodialysis and ECMO. The department also has well-equipped High Dependency Unit (HDU).

The faculty and PG residents are involved in classroom and bedside teaching of MBBS and BDS students. Academic activities in the form of seminars, case presentations, journal clubs are held daily and interdepartmental academic activities like seminars, clinic-pathological conferences, clinico-radiological conferences are held frequently.

All post graduates and teaching faculty do take part in these academic activities. The Department regularly organises seminars, CMEs and conferences at state and national levels.

To facilitate adequate clinical exposure, the PG students are posted to various specialties like Cardiology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology. They are also posted to ICU in rotation to learn various critical skills like endotracheal intubation, central line insertion and bedside echo and ultrasound.

The Department boasts of some of the best faculties in Medicine. There are 11 highly experienced Professors, 3 Associate Professors and adequate number of well-motivated Assistant Professors and Senior Residents.

Services  Provided

  • OPD: One of the busiest out patients’ departments (OPDs) catering to the maximum number of patients visiting the hospital is in the Department.
  • IPD: Well-equipped ICU, HDU, general wards are there to serve the inpatients coming to the Department.
  • Procedures: Routine bedside services of procedures like paracentesis, thoracocentesis, Lumbar puncture, bedside 2D Echo and Ultrasonography are available.
  • The Department manages cases from many domains which include tropical medicine, infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, various cardiac conditions and gastrointestinal disorders.
  • It also treats endocrine disorders like diabetes, thyroid diseases, adrenal insufficiency, metabolic diseases, neurological conditions, renal diseases, rheumatological conditions.
  • Various autoimmune conditions, hematological conditions like different types of anemias, platelet and white cell disorders are also treated here.

Research/Publications/Awards

Research and publications are the key areas of focus. The institute has a full-fledged Department of Research with biostatisticians. Regular training programmes in research methodology are conducted here.

The PG wing of the Department has to its credit more than 100 presentations in various state, national and international conferences like APICON, RSSDI.

The faculty and PG students have received many awards during the conferences including best paper awards at national APICON and RSSDI conferences, and ICON excellence awards. The PG residents are actively encouraged and supported for paper writing and presentations.

The faculty of the department has more than a hundred publications in Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science and other indexed journals.
