Overview

Department of Pharmacology at KIMS has taken up new fields of research through activities like monitoring adverse drug reactions vis a vis Pharmacovigilance as well as providing updated information on new and established drugs through Drug Information Centre since 2018. It has several important initiatives to its credit such as Animal House for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals, Antibiotic Stewardship Project, Prescription Auditing and Computer Aided Learning process. The Department has so far published 150 research articles in national and international journals.

Though Pharmacology deals with the study of drugs and drug development, the concept of “Evidence Based Medicine’’ has provided a new rationale for choosing and using drugs skilfully to relieve patient’s ailments. In this changing scenario, Pharmacology has also taken up new fields of research through activities like monitoring adverse drug reactions vis a vis Pharmacovigilance as well as providing updated information on new and established drugs through Drug Information Centre (DIC).

The mission of the department is to provide academic excellence to the students and promote various research projects including animal and human studies, perform activities like monitoring adverse drug reactions vis a vis Pharmacovigilance and providing updated information on new and established drugs via Drug Information centre. It also carries out prescription auditing.

Services  Provided

  • Pharmacovigilance is the science relating to the collection, detection, assessment, monitoring, and prevention of adverse effects with pharmaceutical products. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has initiated a nation-wide Pharmacovigilance Program of India – PvPI, under which 311 Adverse Drug Research centres have been established at different medical colleges, hospitals. The Department of Pharmacology, KIMS has been functioning as one of the AMCs since September. 
  •  It has several important initiatives to its credit such as Animal House for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals, Drug Information Centre (DIC) established since 2018, Antibiotic Stewardship Project, Prescription Auditing and Computer Aided Learning to assist learning of Pharmacology in an effective way among students.
  •  The Department of Pharmacology has one Clinical Laboratory, one Experimental Pharmacology Laboratory and one Post-graduate Research Laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment available for the various studies and experiments.

Research/Publications/Awards

The Department has so far published 150 research articles in national and international journals. While Dr Chaitali Pattanayak was awarded Dr J.K Mohanty Prize for Best Paper presentation in IPS-OSB Conference, Dr Sougata Sarkar was conferred Dr J.K Mohanty Prize for Best Paper presentation in IPS-OSB conference 2017. 

Dr Vartika Srivastava- Published a book “Postgraduate Pharmacology” along with Dr Sougata Sarkar in 2020 and two short-term studentship projects (STS-ICMR) were completed by Ms Divyani Jena and Ms Anoushka Prakash under the guidance of Dr Vartika Srivastava in the year 2019 and 2020 respectively

The Department organised a CME on December 5, 2015 with the topic “Pharmacovigilance and therapeutic drug monitoring” and on April 9, 2022 with the topic “Medication errors and its prevention.’’
