Overview

The Paediatrics Department is counted among the best units in KIMS and draws patients from across Odisha and outside because of the exceptional standard of paediatrics care offered at affordable cost.

The Department has a vision to build up a Pediatric Centre of national repute in next three years and of international repute in the next five years.

Its mission is to provide exceptional standards of Pediatric Care at affordable cost with special emphasis on patient safety and satisfaction.

It also aims to produce medical graduates and Paediatric Post Graduates possessing sound professional knowledge, immaculate skills and practicing appropriate attitude, values and responsiveness, while being globally relevant.

About The Department

  • The Department introduced MD Paediatrics in 2017 with 3 seats, subsequently revised to 6. It started a Fellowship in Neonatology in 2016, running a one year course with 2 seats.

  • The Fellowship in Critical Care was launched in 2020 with 2 seats as a one year course. While 2 faculty members are undergoing PhD programme, 3 have been identified as PhD guides.

  • The Paediatrics Department of KIMS works as a one stop solution dedicated to deliver complete, comprehensive, compassionate state-of-the-art health care services to children from birth to adolescence.

  • NICU- The 45 bedded NICU is fully equipped with Level-III NICU facilities for medical as well as surgical needs and provides round the clock intensive care by qualified & dedicated neonatologists and highly skilled nursing staff.
  • It is credited with saving the most vulnerable of babies i.e. those with extremely low birth weight even weighing 530 gms.
  • To meet the rising demand, another 50 beds will be added to the Department shortly.
  • PICU (Pediatrics ICU)- The sophisticated 14 bedded PICU (8 beds in main PICU & 6 beds in HDU) is the best in Odisha. It has competent staff viz Pediatrics Intensivists and dedicated nursing staff.
  • The Department gets referrals from different part of Odisha, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal. To our credit we have diagnosed many rare diseases and saved many serious children. Our PICU has been accredited for one year Fellowship course in Critical Care in 2020 by IAP and 2 fellows are undergoing the programme every year.
  • Pediatric Ward and Cabin- There are 150 beds and 15 Special cabins for Pediatrics patients.

  • Using prone ventilation for Non-responders to Conventional ventilators
  • Bedside USG and 2D ECHO for sick children

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Around 180 neonates were delivered to COVID 19 positive mothers and were managed under direct guidance of the Department. Salvage rate has been quite remarkable; as only five babies with comorbidities succumbed.
  • Non COVID NICU in KIMS has been running as usual during the pandemic catering to all inborn and out born babies.
  • Neonatal high frequency ventilation was initiated in extreme low birth weight babies. This is the first centre in Odisha to do so.
  • KIMS has produced awardees of the Best MBBS student scoring highest in Paediatric subject out of six medical colleges in Odisha, consecutively for two years in 2011 and 2012.
  • The nursing staff secured second position consecutively for two years in 2012 and 2013 at the All India Pediatric Nursing Quiz Competition, conducted by NNF.
  • Paediatric ICU of KIMS got accreditation of Level –III PICU and we are the first centre in the entire Eastern Zone to start a fellowship programme in Pediatric Intensive Care, in 2020.

RESEARCH/PUBLICATIONS/AWARDS

(Conferences/CME/Workshop)

  • The Department had organized CME on “Thalassemia Ensuring Optimal Care for All” in June 2019, Paediatric Intensive Care workshop in November 2019, Pre-Conference Workshop on Development Supportive Care (DSC) and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in October 2021.
  • Besides, it organized 41st Annual Conference of IAP Odisha State Pedicon on December 11 and 12 in 2021 and Basic NRP Workshop on March 8, 2022.
  • During the last two years, 70 papers were published by the Faculty of the Department and currently 20 ongoing research projects are underway.

Visits

  • While eminent neonatologist Prof (Dr) Praveen Kumar, Head of Neonatology Division, PGI Chandigarh (first DM in Neonatologist of India) visited our NICU on 22nd Nov 19 and appreciated the level of Neonatal care of the Department, Prof. (Dr) N Koneti Rao (MD, FRCPA), a staff physician in National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at National Institute of Health (NIH) was a visiting professor in the Dept of Pediatrics on 11-12 Nov 19.

  • Prof (Dr) Neelam Giri, Staff Clinician, genetic branch DCEG/NCI (Dept of Cancer Epidemiology/National Cancer Institute) Bethesda (USA), was a visiting professor in the Dept. of Pediatrics on 13-14 Nov 19.
