Overview

The Department of Orthopaedics is a state-of-the-art referral centre. It offers undergraduate and post-graduate teaching in General Orthopaedics, acute trauma care, critical joint replacement, Arthroscopic and Arthroplasty procedures, deformity correction surgeries, spine surgeries, and hand surgeries.

The Department has got an experienced team to perform total hip replacement (THR), total knee replacement (TKR), shoulder arthroplasty surgery and total elbow surgery etc. making KIMS Orthopaedics a sought-after name in Odisha. These help the students learn better and groom themselves as successful orthopaedic surgeons in future.
The Department faculties have 67 publications to their credit.

The Orthopaedics Department of KIMS has got state-of-the-art laminar flow OT with equipment for joint replacement surgeries in absolutely sterile environments.

It has facilities for sophisticated spine surgery and facilities for complex surgeries of limb lengthening and deformity corrections, using Ilizarov apparatus and fixators with facilities for 3-dimensional correction (Ortho – Suv).

The department has facilities for Paediatric orthopaedic surgery and Hand surgery. High-end instruments like high-speed burr, O-arm in OT enables precision orthopaedics surgery and advanced trauma management and for the preservation of joint and spine.

The Department also offers a robust Post-Graduate programme in Orthopaedic Surgery with a current annual intake of seven trainees.

While there is cutting-edge research work in trauma, reconstruction and deformity correction, there are more than 13 projects ongoing.

  • Arthroscopic surgeries and joint replacement of hips, knees are routinely done. Sophisticated spinal surgeries of decompression and fixation are done routinely by experts.

Services Provided

  • The services rendered by the orthopaedics department include conservative methods of treatment as well as surgical treatment when indicated.
  • In orthopedic OPD/day care services treatments like intra-articular injections, renewal of plasters, adjustments in external fixators and minor debridement of wounds are included.
  • Patients with degenerative joint diseases get relief from surgeries like osteotomy or replacement of joints.

  • The areas of research interest of the Department are: Joint preserving surgeries, limb lengthening and deformity corrections.
  • The members of the faculty design new jigs and implants which proved to be good for orthopaedic surgery.
  • The faculties of the orthopaedic department have already published 67 publications.
  • Eminent faculties of the department are themselves at the summits of their work with Prof Dr. Santosh Rath the President of the Indian Society of Hand Surgeons, 2022.
  • Prof. Dr.Tanmoy Mohanty, Head of Department of Orthopaedics, is himself the President of the Eastern Zone of the Indian Orthopaedic association.
  • Dr. Debashish Mishra, Associate Professor of the Department of Orthopaedics acted as faculty to train young arthroscopy surgeons at the Cadaveric Skill Station at Ramaiah Medical College and Hospital, Bengaluru in 2022.
  • Among the students, Dr Debobrata Saha along with Dr Arfaaz Siddiqui, PGT3 won 1st prize in OOACON Quiz in 2020.
  • Similarly, Dr S Vishnu and Dr Prethiv R, third-year PGT got third prize in the PG Quiz competition of OAACON 2022 (Annual Arthroplasty conference of the State).
