Overview

The Department of Surgery at KIMS, with its team of best surgeons and supporting paramedical staff, is committed to providing best of class healthcare services at affordable cost. It also adheres to ethical practice with high-end technology and ensuring patient care with humane touch. The Department also offers a robust Post-Graduate programme in General Surgery with a current annual intake of 10 trainees. While the services include General Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, LASER and day-care procedures, other procedures like Radiofrequency Ablation, ESWL, Liver Transplant and Robotic Surgery are likely to be added to the list in future. The areas of research interest of the Department are: Minimally Invasive Surgery, Hepato-biliary Surgery, Colo-rectal Surgery, Benign and study of Malignant Breast Disease. The faculty and research scholars have, so far, published 49 publications.

With updated surgical techniques and the integration of the latest innovations at KIMS, Bhubaneswar, the Surgery Department aims to shorten hospital stay and extend quality of life to its patients. Availability of advanced Laparoscopic Operation Theatre and an eminent team of ICU doctors has strengthened the surgical team workforce.

The Department of Surgery maintains high academic standards for the MBBS students by encouraging them to participate in discussions, seminars and integration classes. The Post-Graduate trainees are also given an exposure of various super specialities like Plastic surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Urology and Oncosurgery as a part of their training curriculum. We are in the process of procuring Laparoscopic Simulators which would provide the undergraduate and Post-Graduate students an edge in mastering basic laparoscopic skills.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL), a non-invasive procedure that breaks down stones in parts and drains them out through the urinary system, in the pancreas or in the bile duct is also being added.

Services  Provided

  • General Surgeries include excision of cysts, lipoma, lumps, lymph node biopsies, all types of Hernia repairs and all types of circumcision, hydrocele surgery, fistula and fissure, perianal abscess, sinus surgery, varicose vein surgery, skin grafting, amputations, gland surgeries, neck dissection, lymph node excision, salivary gland surgeries, oral malignancies and gastrointestinal surgeries.
  • Under the breast surgery removal of the affected parts in the breast, conservation and reconstruction surgery of breast and drainage of breast abscess are efficiently carried out by the faculty members. Interestingly, under the laparoscopic procedure surgery for the gastrointestinal diseases, appendicectomy, hernia repair, bariatric surgery, colo-rectal surgery and many more are done.
  • In surgical OPD/day care services treatment for ingrowing toe nail excision, hand space /foot space infections and abscess drainage, sebaceous cyst, dermoid, ganglion excision, haemangioma and fibroma are done.

Research/Publications/Awards

The areas of research interest of the Department are: Minimally Invasive Surgery, Hepato-biliary Surgery, Colo-rectal Surgery, Benign and Malignant Breast Disease. So far, the faculty and research scholars have published 49 publications from the department.

Among the students, Dr Riddhika Majumdar won a gold medal from KIIT University as the Best outgoing student in 2020, Dr Prathamesh Mishra and Dr Harsh Bhomaj, third year PGT won third prize in OSASICON Quiz in 2020.

Similarly Dr Harsh Bhomaj, third year PGT won third prize in OASICON case presentation in 2020 on early breast carcinoma. He again won first prize in ASICON poster presentation in 2019 for laparoscopic fenestration surgery of primary splenic cyst.

Dr ASJ Swaroop, third year PGT got third prize in ASICON poster presentation in 2019 for breast conserving surgery in a BRCA mutation positive patient using a tissue marker and a USG guided live localization technique.

Dr Pallavi Nair, second year PGT won 1st prize in OSALCICON poster presentation in 2019 on a rare case of intussusception in an adult. The Department had organised one SELSICON conference in 2014 and OSASICON in 2018.
