Overview

The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (FMT) at KIMS Bhubaneswar is involved in undergraduate teaching in academic research. Forensic Medicine and Toxicology is currently a subject of the Third (Part- I) professional MBBS course. While the vision of the Department of FMT is to impart knowledge regarding the legal responsibilities of a physician and assist the judiciary with knowledge of medicine, its mission is to train the medicos in handling medico-legal cases efficiently. The faculty members have so far published 21 research articles in international and national journals.

The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (FMT) at KIMS Bhubaneswar is involved in undergraduate teaching in academic research. Forensic Medicine and Toxicology is currently a subject of the Third (Part- I) professional MBBS course. The students are taught the subject in theory classes and practical demonstrations. The topics of Autopsy, Post-mortem changes, Medical Law and Ethics, Injuries, Clinical Forensic Medicine and Toxicology are taught to the students. We prepare the future doctors to be equipped with medicolegal knowledge and assist the judiciary, whenever required.

While the vision of the Department of FMT is to impart knowledge regarding the legal responsibilities of a physician and assist the judiciary with knowledge of medicine, its mission is to train the medicos in handling medico-legal cases efficiently. The students are also taught about their rights, duties and privileges including medical ethics and etiquette.

The faculty not only encourages the students to take up FMT as a specialization and reduce the shortage of FMT experts in the country, but they also take on research work in the discipline and involve students in projects to orient them towards independent research activities in future.

Services  Provided

  • Apart from the regular teaching jobs, the Department of FMT provides post-mortem demonstrations, opinion in poisoning cases, opinion on medico-legal cases in KIMS, preparation of Age Estimation Reports for KISS sports teams, Mentor-Mentee Programme and toxicology screening.
  • The Department is equipped with modern equipment and tools for FMT studies including Automatic Tissue Processing Machine, Spectroscopic lens with adjustable slit, weighing machines for organs and foetus and Hand Set heat sealer.

Research/Publications/Awards

Dr Asis Kumar Ray, Professor and HOD has area of interest in toxicological research; Associate Professor Dr Shagun Thakur does research in toxicology, burn, child trafficking and pernary artery.  Assistant Professor Dr Tushar Bhutada has also got area of interest in toxicology. The faculty members have so far published 21 research articles in international and national journals. The Department organised a CME on “Toxicological emergencies in modern era’’ on December 18, 2021.
