Overview

With the advent of new and precision technologies in endoscopy and microscopy, Otolaryngology has become a speciality in ENT surgery and surgeons at KIMS have become the forerunners in the field by scaling up their surgical skills for better patient care and fast recovery. The Department also conducts Speech Clinic and Speech Therapy, Voice and Swallowing Therapy. Besides, it conducts therapeutic and management for brain injury and stroke cases, Laryngotomy or Head and Neck Cancer rehabilitation, behavioural therapy and several operative procedures. The Department has 28 publications so far to its credit.

The ENT Department at KIMS is a highly advanced treatment centre for Ear, Nose and Throat related diseases, with a dedicated team of highly trained ENT surgeons and audiologist.

Services  Provided

  • The Department also conducts Speech Clinic and Speech Therapy, Voice and Swallowing Therapy, Therapeutical and management for brain injury and stroke cases, Laryngotomy or Head and Neck Cancer rehabilitation, behavioural therapy and several operative procedures.
  • The operative procedures under KIMS ENT Department include Ear Surgeries, Nose Surgeries, Head and Neck Surgeries.
  • The Department is equipped with Microscope (Carl Zeiss) and Endoscope (Karl Storz) and these instruments are one of its kind in Eastern Zone.  A modern audiology set up with facilities for routine and advanced audiology like OAE BERA. ASSR etc. are the hallmark of this department.
  • Coblator instrument, a first in the Eastern Zone, helps in conducting highly advanced Tonsil operations, which ensures less blood and minimal pain. Similarly, Endo Laryngeal System in ENT at KIMS is also the first such facility in Eastern India and is useful during Voice and Injection Laryngeal Surgery.
  • While microsurgical work including Tympanoplasty, Stapedectomy and Mastoidectomy are also carried out in the department. Implantation Autology Unit (a proposed programme for Cochlear Implant to help the completely deaf to hear again), is also in the pipeline. Treatment for snoring (UPPP- Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty), an advanced surgery to treat Sleep Apnea or snoring is available at KIMS.
  • The department also helps hundreds of patients in having Nasal Surgeries for treating Nasal Blockage, Nose reconstruction surgery, Loss of Smell and Sneezing. Above all, a Special Team is there round the clock to tackle ENT Emergencies at KIMS.

Research/Publications/Awards

The team of experts at ENT Department, KIMS are conducting research in the areas like ENT imaging, Post operative care, Intra operative care, infectious ENT problems, Paediatric otolaryngology, Head and Neck, Post Covid ENT manifestations, Management of Headache, Management of Vertigo, Management and evaluation of voice disorders. While there are 28 publications so far, 25 projects are still on.

Prof. Kabikanta Samantaray, Vice-President of Association Otolaryngology Bhubaneswar Branch and past vice-president of APSI (Association of Phono Surgeons of India) is a Fellow of Otology Causse Clinic France and in SRBD Mannheim Germany.
