The Department of Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) AT KIMS is dedicated to providing excellent patient care on par with international standards and protocols. The faculty is committed to the philosophy of “patient first” to provide patients with easy access along with the most advanced and highest quality CTVS care. Services of the team of doctors are available round the clock. Since its inception in 2014, the CTVS Department has performed about 1,500 surgeries including many complex and high-risk cases. It has also been credited with many pioneering efforts in Odisha such as valve repair surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) and ECMO Programme.

The faculty is committed to patient-focussed care, a philosophy of “patient first”, to provide patients with easy access along with the most advanced and highest quality CTVS care. The team of doctors are available for patient care round the clock. Since its inception in 2014, the CTVS Department has performed about 1,500 surgeries, including complex and high-risk cases. It has also been credited with many pioneering efforts in Odisha such as valve repair surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) and ECMO Programme.

The surgeons at CTVS Department work under a team-based approach and provide evidenced-based treatment, patient-centric care and qualitative and affordable health care. The various surgeries are provided under four broad categories, i.e. Adult Cardiac Surgery, Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery.

Services  Provided

  • The Department conducts surgeries like Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery – including high-risk Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery, Off Pump Bypass Surgery, Heart Valve Surgeries, Minimally Invasive Cardiac surgery (MICS) and congenital heart surgery for adults. Likewise, it also provides closure of ASD and VSD Intracardiac Repair, Tetrology of Fallot and division and suture of PDA and repair of coarctation in paediatric cases.
  • While under thoracic surgery it provides Lobectomy / Pneumonectomy / Segmental resection, it also conducts Decortication, excision Cervical rib and excision of mediastinal tumour. Similarly, Vascular surgery it has a facility for emergency vascular trauma, Aortic aneurysm and dissection, peripheral vascular diseases and surgery for Varicose Veins.
  • The Department has got the state-of-art first ECMO machine in Odisha, it has also had the latest heart-lung machines, IABP machines and two well-equipped modulated cardiac theatres with hermetically sealed automatic doors. It has LED lights and pendant mounted anaesthesia machines, a 14-bedded post-operative ICU with ultra-modern facilities, a four-bedded high dependency area and a 20-bedded cardiac general ward.

Research/Publications/Awards

The Department of CTVS has grants from the Indian Council of Medical Research for the national registry of VTE and a research project on thromboembolism. Under the patent and innovation, it has developed the CPR training kiosk and CPR machine by Dr AK Badmali.
