Overview

The Department of Paediatric Surgery is headed by well renowned Paediatric Surgeon, Dr. Subrat Kumar Mohanty. The Department became a separate fully functional unit in 2017, with its rapid growth enhanced by its highly trained and experienced team.

Services offered include emergency paediatric surgical care, neonatal surgical interventions for congenital anomalies, paediatric urological procedures, comprehensive management of paediatric solid tumours and a minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgical facilities.

  • The Department has rapidly grown to encompass multiple therapeutic modalities and comprehensive management catering to the less known branch of Paediatric Surgery such as
      • Multi-disciplinary involvement to ensure rapid diagnosis, discussion and management of confounding paediatric surgical cases, particularly congenital anomalies, paediatric solid tumours, hepatobiliary surgical anomalies and paediatric gastrointestinal surgical conditions
      • Provision of minimally invasive laparoscopic management of multiple conditions such as congenital hernia, hydrocele, undescended testis, chronic empyema, mesenteric cysts, acute appendicitis, cholelithiasis, pelviureteric junction obstruction and so forth
      • Designated neonatal care in tandem with the support of NICU team, with proper antenatal and postnatal counselling, stabilization of neonate and detailed diagnostic and interventional care
      • 24*7 emergency care for all general paediatric surgical emergencies
  • The Department has maintained excellent records of all the rare, novel and common cases encountered, thereby widening our database, ensuring our focus to publications. The department also enables postgraduate and undergraduate students to strive for opportunities in research within the grounds of paediatric surgery, thereby improving publications from students as well
  • The faculty in Paediatric Surgery are members of several recognized National and International forums, being frequent guest lecturers, examiners, participants and contributors to major conferences and congresses in the field.
  • Enhanced focus and contribution both in theoretical and practical chapters in several textbooks, to aid in furthering the knowledge in our field

Services Offered

  • 24*7 Emergency neonatal and paediatric surgical services including management of critical emergencies such as neonatal intestinal perforation, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, tracheoesophageal fistula with esophageal atresia, anorectal malformations, acute appendicitis, malrotation, testicular torsion

  • Minimal access laparoscopic procedures for congenital hernia, hydrocele, undescended testis, posterior urethral valves, ureteroceles, benign enteric cysts, urachal cysts, acute appendicitis, cholelithiasis, empyema

  • Ultrasound guided procedures for vascular malformations and common conditions such as intussusception, in cohesion with department of Radiodiagnosis, imaging and interventional radiology

  • Paediatric surgical oncology care in tandem with Department of Paediatric Hematooncology, encompassing diagnostic evaluation, chemotherapy, surgical removal of tumour, radiotherapy

  • Diagnostic procedures such as Micturating cystourethrogram, Distal loopogram and Upper GI dye study for neonates and children

  • Designated evaluation and surgical management for major paediatric surgical conditions such as Extrahepatic biliary atresia, choledochal cyst, primary vesicoureteric reflux, Hirshsprung’s disease, anorectal malformations

  • Antenatal counselling and guidance in tandem with NICU team

  • Strict multidisciplinary discussion and management for all patients, to ensure complete care for the child, with involvement of family unit
