Overview

The Department of Paediatric Surgery is headed by well renowned Paediatric Surgeon, Dr. Subrat Kumar Mohanty. The Department became a separate fully functional unit in 2017, with its rapid growth enhanced by its highly trained and experienced team.

Services offered include emergency paediatric surgical care, neonatal surgical interventions for congenital anomalies, paediatric urological procedures, comprehensive management of paediatric solid tumours and a minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgical facilities.

  • The Department has rapidly grown to encompass multiple therapeutic modalities and comprehensive management catering to the less known branch of Paediatric Surgery such as
      • Multi-disciplinary involvement to ensure rapid diagnosis, discussion and management of confounding paediatric surgical cases, particularly congenital anomalies, paediatric solid tumours, hepatobiliary surgical anomalies and paediatric gastrointestinal surgical conditions
      • Provision of minimally invasive laparoscopic management of multiple conditions such as congenital hernia, hydrocele, undescended testis, chronic empyema, mesenteric cysts, acute appendicitis, cholelithiasis, pelviureteric junction obstruction and so forth
      • Designated neonatal care in tandem with the support of NICU team, with proper antenatal and postnatal counselling, stabilization of neonate and detailed diagnostic and interventional care
      • 24*7 emergency care for all general paediatric surgical emergencies
  • The Department has maintained excellent records of all the rare, novel and common cases encountered, thereby widening our database, ensuring our focus to publications. The department also enables postgraduate and undergraduate students to strive for opportunities in research within the grounds of paediatric surgery, thereby improving publications from students as well
  • The faculty in Paediatric Surgery are members of several recognized National and International forums, being frequent guest lecturers, examiners, participants and contributors to major conferences and congresses in the field.

Services Offered

  • 24*7 Emergency neonatal and paediatric surgical services including management of critical emergencies such as neonatal intestinal perforation, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, tracheoesophageal fistula with esophageal atresia, anorectal malformations, acute appendicitis, malrotation, testicular torsion

  • Minimal access laparoscopic procedures for congenital hernia, hydrocele, undescended testis, posterior urethral valves, ureteroceles, benign enteric cysts, urachal cysts, acute appendicitis, cholelithiasis, empyema

  • Ultrasound guided procedures for vascular malformations and common conditions such as intussusception, in cohesion with department of Radiodiagnosis, imaging and interventional radiology

  • Paediatric surgical oncology care in tandem with Department of Paediatric Hematooncology, encompassing diagnostic evaluation, chemotherapy, surgical removal of tumour, radiotherapy

  • Diagnostic procedures such as Micturating cystourethrogram, Distal loopogram and Upper GI dye study for neonates and children

  • Designated evaluation and surgical management for major paediatric surgical conditions such as Extrahepatic biliary atresia, choledochal cyst, primary vesicoureteric reflux, Hirshsprung’s disease, anorectal malformations

  • Antenatal counselling and guidance in tandem with NICU team

  • Strict multidisciplinary discussion and management for all patients, to ensure complete care for the child, with involvement of family unit

DEPARTMENT OF PAEDIATRIC SURGERY FACULTY INTRODUCTION

Dr. Subrat Kumar Mohanty started the department as an extension of General Surgery in 2012 and since then has pioneered new developments for the departmental growth. He completed his MBBS from SCB Medical College, Cuttack in 1987, M.S General Surgery from SCB Medical College, Cuttack in 1992 and MCh Paediatric Surgery from PGI Chandigarh in 1997. He has several years of experience as a Senior Resident and Consultant in premium government and private hospitals such as Gangaram Hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, contributing to his leadership skills in running the department with ease and finesse. He has over 15 publications in various International and National journals and is an avid and enthusiastic teacher to his students. He has a keen interest in Hepatobiliary and neonatal surgeries.

Prof Dr. Pradeep Kumar Jena, joined as an esteemed faculty in the department in 2024. An extremely experienced Paediatric surgeon, he completed his MBBS in MKCG Berhampur in 1982, M.S General Surgery in MKCG Berhampur in 1986 and MCh Paediatric Surgery in AIIMS, New Delhi in 1994. He led the department of Paediatric Surgery in MKCG Berhampur for more than a decade, firmly establishing the department roots. He thereafter led the department of Paediatric Surgery in SCB Cuttack for 12 years and cemented his experience furthur, ranging from managing critical neonatal congenital anomalies, to complex thoracic and abdominal cases. He has more than 20 publications in world renowned journals, and is an active and enthusiastic academician. He has a keen interest in Paediatric neonatal surgery and Paediatric Urology. His expertise, knowledge and skills have strengthened the department of Paediatric Surgery in KIMS with the future prospect of addition of MCh superspeciality seats.

Dr. Harish Chandra Tudu joined as Consultant Paediatric Surgeon in the Department of Paediatric Surgery, KIMS, Bhubaneswar in 2017. He completed his MBBS in 2002 from MKCG Berhampur, M.S General Surgery from MKCG Berhampur in 2008 and MCh Paediatric Surgery from SCB Medical College, Cuttack in 2013. He subsequently worked in Manipal Hospital, Bangalore, for 3 years, gaining vast experience in the field of Minimal access surgery and Pediatric Urology, where his keen interest continues to grow. He continues to contribute to the progress of the department with introduction of MAS in unusual and complex Paediatric surgical

Dr. Varsha. M. Totadri joined the Department as Assistant Professor in February 2023, expanding the department furthur to a separate functional unit. She completed her MBBS in 2016 from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, M.S General Surgery in 2020 from Government Stanley medical college, Chennai and MCh Paediatric Surgery from VMMC and Safdarjung hospital, New Delhi in 2023. She has an avid interest in publications and has began the path for the same early, during her residency period. With a great enthusiasm for Paediatric Surgical Oncology, Paediatric MAS and Neonatal surgeries, she continues to learn and enhance her skills under the titulage of other faculties in KIMS. She avidly contributes in inter departmental discussions and multidisciplinary management of cases.
