Ophthalmology KIMS

Overview

Department of ophthalmology, KIMS PBMH Bhubaneswar offers excellent and equitable eyecare services at affordable prices so as to cater to the needs of every section of the society. This department came into existence in 2005 only with two faculty members, but today it has scaled up into a major department with 12 ophthalmology faculties,2 consultants and 8 optometry faculties. We have 18 seats for post-graduates and 20 seats for Bachelor in Ophthalmology (BO) and Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) courses each.

We treat patients starting from newborns to the elderly group. We put the needs of our patients before our own, treat every patient with empathy and respect, provide special attention to the vulnerable group of patients like children, elderly and people with disabilities. We try to maintain the confidentiality, safety and security of all our patients.

Patients can avail of multiple health insurance coverages provided by both the state governments and by the centre such as Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana and Ayushman Bharat. Outdoor patients are seen everyday (9 AM to 5 PM on weekdays and 9 AM to 1 PM on Sundays) while the emergency teams are available round the clock.

The department has 60 beds dedicated for inpatient care and three modern operation theatres with trained nurses. Apart from cataract surgeries, we have pioneered in complex and critical surgeries including vitro-retinal, squint, pediatric cataract, glaucoma and oculoplastic surgeries with utmost perfection.

Apart from clinical services and training undergraduate and post-graduate medical and para-medical students, the faculties and residents actively take up research projects and have nearly 200 publications both in national and international journals.

Medical education

Our department follows CBME curriculum for MBBS implementing innovative teaching with clinical correlations. Apart from regular didactic lectures, there are frequent quizzes, multiple methods of evaluation.

MD post-graduates are trained in basic technologies of Ophthalmology with practical experience. They are trained in pedagogy as early as possible.

Equipments

The department of Ophthalmology is well equipped with all high-end equipments like I-care tonometer, Non-Contact Tonometer, Schiotz and Applanation tonometer, gonioscopy lenses, High end Slit lamps, Keratometer, Direct and Indirect Ophthalmoscopes, A-Scan and B-Scan, IOL Master, YAG laser and Green laser machines, OCT And OCT angiography machines which have been newly acquired ,Ultrasound biomoicroscopy, Fundus fluorescein Angiography, AS-OCT, Humphreys visual field analyser, two high end  phacoemulsification machines (2 Centurions), Constellation machine for retinal surgeries, Synoptophore, squint evaluation equipments and equipments for vision therapy.

Services  Provided

Ocular Adnexa and Orbit– Chalazion, entropion, ectropion, ptosis, symblepharon, tarsorrhaphy, lacrimal sac surgeries (with and without intubation), evisceration with implants, enucleation, mass excisions and biopsies are performed.
Conjunctiva-treatment of chemical injuries, pterygium excision with grafting
Cornea-trauma repair, debridement
Glaucoma-YAG Laser iridotomy, trabeculectomy, combined procedures (with Phacoemulsification and SICS), valve implants, bleb revision
Lens-ECCE, SICS, Phacoemulsification surgeries for all types of cataracts is done with rigid, foldable, multifocals, toric, extended depth of focus premium IOLs, iris claw, scleral fixated intraocular lenses, YAG laser capsulotomy Pediatric cataract surgery with IOL implantation and PPC
Squint surgeries – All types of simple and complex (3 and 4 muscle surgeries) squint surgeries including muscle transplantation, muscle transposition and loop myopexy
Retina-Vitrectomy, intravitreal injections, Retinal detachment, macular hole, ERM surgeries, silicon oil removal, ROP Screening and treatment, SFIOL.

Research

The faculty, undergraduate and post-graduate students are involved in multiple projects at individual levels and at inter-departmental level. There are around 200 research publications, one book and book chapter publication by the faculties.
