The Department of Psychiatry is committed to contribute to the well-being of all. It started more than a decade ago with a vision to make a society that embraces and believes in “Mental Health for All’’.

It strives to create improved resilience, strength and emotional well-being for all individuals through continual pursuit of excellence through compassionate care, leadership and collaboration.

The Department’s success story is from a “one-man army” to formation of a “dedicated full-time mental health care team with vast experience and thorough expertise.

While under its Super-speciality Mental Health Services, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry services are included, it has many Special Clinics which are managed by faculty members efficiently.

  • Infrastructure

    1. Well-furnished air-conditioned private consultation chambers for detailed work up, OPD consultation, psychological assessments, counselling, therapy and all OPD procedures.
    2. In-patient ward facilities. Well ventilated and fully furnished separate wards dedicated for Male in-patients, Female in-patients, Children and Adolescent in-patient areas and de-addiction patients.
    3. Private Cabins and Rooms for in-patient treatment based on availability (limited number)
    4. Designated waiting area for Psychiatry patients with provision for materials for psycho-education.
    5. Procedure Room in the OPD for private examination and administration of injectables/ Stat medications.

    1. State of art Modified ECT Machine with Complete Anaesthesia workstation for ECT
    2. Operation Theatre (OT) with dedicated OT staff for ECT procedure with Pre-ECT clearance.

Events Organised

(Conferences/CME/Workshop)

  • The first-ever “Autism Awareness Month Celebration” in Odisha in the month of April 2022 was organised by the Department of Psychiatry, KIMS.
  • A one day Workshop on “Interventions in Autism” was jointly organized  by the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry subcommittee, Indian Psychiatry Society (IPS) and the Department of Psychiatry, KIMS. We had over 200 delegates physically present and more than 100 participants online.
  • National Webinar-cum-Workshop on “Therapy in Everyday Practice” held at KIMS, Auditorium in hybrid Platform was organized by the department on 29th January 2022 in collaboration with the Indian Psychiatric Society, Odisha State Branch.
  • The Department in collaboration with Social Media Specialty Section, Indian Psychiatry Society 2021 – organized the First National CME on the theme-“Embracing the Inevitable: Digital Hygiene towards Mental Health” on World Social Media Day, 30th June 2021, on online platform.
  • The 4th National Symposium, Women’s Mental Health Specialty Section and Perinatal Psychiatry Task Force organised online in collaboration with Indian Psychiatry Society on 13th December 2020.
  • The Department collaborated to organise the 26th National Conference of the Indian Association for Social Psychiatry, organized by All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar and co-sponsored by the World Psychiatry Association and World Association for Social Psychiatry held from 29th Nov- 1st Dec 2019 at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.
  • National CME cum Workshop on “Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse – Current Status and Future Challenges” organised in collaboration with the Child and Adolescent Sub-committee of the Indian Psychiatry Society, Odisha State Branch, jointly organized by the Indian Psychiatry Society on 7th Feb 2019.
  • Mid-Term CME on the theme “Sexual Dysfunction-Management Update” organized by the Indian Psychiatry Society, Odisha State Branch and the Department was held on 23rd-24th June 2018.

Research & Publication

  • The faculty members have an impressive 100 research publications in various International and National journals. Their areas of research include: Psychopharmacology, Organic and Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Qualitative Research, Addiction Psychiatry, Suicidality and Self Harm and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
  • Under the grants, patents and innovation four ongoing direct ICMR-STS projects are under the Department and two collaborative projects are with other departments.
  • One ongoing internationally funded project as part of the Psychiatric Research Infrastructure for Intervention and Implementation In India (PRIIIA) medium-term training program by the University of Pittsburgh. It was awarded the Advanced in-Country Research Award –International Award (upto grant worth 30,000$) to the Department of Psychiatry, KIMS in March 2022.
  • The ‘Bernard Lown Scholars in Cardio-vascular Health Program’ of the Havard School of Public Health bestowed on one of the faculties.
  • The Young Scientist Award, Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS), announced during the ANCIPS, 2022 for the research paper “Tofisopam as an alternative intervention in organic catatonia: An open label study” to our Department.
