Surgical problems in paediatric age group are quite different from those encountered by adults. About 5-7% of the new born babies may be having problem requiring surgical management. Paediatric surgeons are specially trained, having extensive experience and expertise in managing congenital as well as acquired surgical problems in paediatric age group. In KIMS Hospital, Neonatologists, Paediatric physicians and Intensivists work in harmony to provide the best possible care and outcome.

Newborn care ( 0 - 28 days of life)- New born care (20 beds) consists of care at delivery, Indoor facilities, follow up clinic and Immunization in Immunization clinic. New born care includes attending to all high risk deliveries for Resuscitation and stabilization in labor room, operation room. Indoor facilities for newborn consists of 20 beds - Level-III, (06 beds) Level-II, (08 beds), Level-I (06 beds)

Our NICU is working par excellence in Odisha with better salvage & outcome rate comparable to any neonatal unit of repute in the country. It has established its brand name in the state in a short span of time, and drawing many expectant mothers & newborns not only from Bhubaneswar/ Cuttack but also from other parts of the state. Recently a rare case of Fetal Hydrops was managed successfully by a
team of five neonatal pediatricians as an example of high level team work of International standards and was first of its kind in Odisha.

NICU Facilities

  • Mechanical ventilation including High frequency Ventilation.
  • Hypothermia management by Radiant Warmer.
  • Jaundice management by double surface phototherapy & exchange transfusion as needed.
  • Treatment of shock/sepsis /respiratory distress/ apnea/ hypoglycemia, etc.
  • Prolonged treatment for extreme preterm /very low -birth wt. babies.
  • Neonatal ventilation and procedures like I.V cannulation, umbilical catheterization , Lumbar puncture, Intubation and surfactant therapy, Emergency Thoracic drainage for tension pneumothorax, etc.
  • Early referral to pediatric surgeon (KIMS) for emergency surgery for TRACHEO-ESOPHAGEAL fistula, Diaphragmatic hernia etc.
  • Special training to mothers for successful Breast feeding , Kangaroo mother care, counseling for baby care and future pregnancy.
  • Newborn care is accomplished by highly qualified & trained Neonatologists trained in Glasgow, UK, Rainbow Hospital, Hyderabad, Neonatology unit of SCB MCH& SVP PGIP,Cuttack.

PICU Facilities

Intensive care for critically ill Infants & Children.

  • Present PICU , with 06 beds, 2nd of its kind in Odisha with excellent facilities has been able to save many lives.
  • Four fulltime qualified and experienced Pediatric- lntensivist give round the clock services in PICU.

Indoor Facilities-

  • Pediatrics ward is providing indoor facilities from one month of age toadolescents well supported by treating pediatrician & skilled nursing staff. Their managementwarrants not only excellent clinical acumen from treating pediatrician but also sympathetic approach and dealing from attending nursing staff.
  • It attracts patients from far and wide places including different parts of Odisha &neighboring states.

Department Faculties-

Highly qualified Senior post graduate teachers with many years of experience ranging from 30years to 40 years in P.G Institute and Medical colleges &Hospitals of Odisha and abroad ( U.K, U.S.A, SAUDIARABIA, Libya etc) are professors in the dept. Apart from that, all faculty members and Senior Residents are highly qualified and all have undergone
training in Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) and Pediatrics Advanced Life Support (PALS). 50% have additional fellowship/ D.N.B training in Neonatology , Critical care, Genetics, Adolescent Medicine, Clinical Epidemiology, Nutrition etc .
